What Is The Memory Stick Duo

Memory Stick Duo
The Memory Stick Duo is basically a range of memory cards launched by Sony that works on the flash format. The predominant feature of the Memory Stick Duo is that it is a removable, or portable, device and hence it is a convenient, transportable and easy to use form of data storage. The Memory Stick Duo was basically created as a solution for Sony’s interest in building a flash format based memory card that was remarkably small in terms of sized and could hence be used for devices such as the Sony PlayStation Portable, mobile phones and small, pocket size digital cameras.

Memory Stick In Sony PSP
The Memory Stick Duo competes in the market with the Secure Digital format memory card and it is smaller in size, being around two thirds part shorter than the average memory stick. Don’t let the small size fool you though, because the Memory Stick Duo is more expensive. The Memory Stick Duo comes with the same functions as the bigger Memory Stick and one can purchase it in the High Speed mode or without it and you can also choose between buying one with the MagicGate support or without it. The Memory Stick Duo came with a size of 128 MB.
Memory Stick Duo Replaced: Memory Stick PRO Duo

128MB Memory Stick Duo
Given the problems in terms of storage space that were caused with the Memory Stick Duo, the new Memory Stick PRO Duo was launched. With a small size of only 128 MB and a noticeably slow rate of data transfer speed the Memory Stick Duo soon became a somewhat problematic technology and the need for more speed and more space resulted in the Memory Stick PRO Duo. This new version was actually based on a similar format to the bigger Memory Stick PRO and incorporated some technicalities from the Memory Stick Duo as well but came with advanced space and speed. It was launched in different variants with and without the MagicGate support system and the High Speed mode.

32 GB Memory Stick Pro Duo
The Memory Stick PRO Duo was released in March 2008 with a then-impressive space of 16GB. To keep up with the market a 32 GB format Memory Stick PRO Duo was also launched by Sony in August, the following year. In the same year, SanDisk and Sony came together to announce that they were planning the creation and release of a Memory Stick Pro format with even greater memory that could reach the supposed space mark of 2 Terabytes. Sony launched this product under the label Memory Stick XC.
The Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo Is Launched

32GB Memory Stick Pro-HG Duo
The Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo was introduced by Sony on the 11th of December in the year 2006. Sony launched this product in collaboration with SanDisk. Ordinarily the Memory Stick PRO systems utilize only serial and 4 bit parallel interface schemes but for the Memory Stick PRO-HG a new 8 bit parallel interface system was incorporated. The interface clock was sped up to go from 40 MHz to 60 MHz. With these modifications the Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo achieved a transfer speed that was three times greater than that of the Memory Stick PRO format.

The different variants of the Memory Stick Duo can be used in a number of ways. The Memory Stick Duo Adaptor was created to allow users to connect the memory sticks in devices that can only accumulate or read data directly from the original version of the Memory Stick created by Sony. The adaptor basically acts as an interface between the latest variants of the Memory Stick and recipient systems that are compatible with only the original format. The adaptor is basically used for the newer memory sticks- the Memory Stick Duo, the Memory Stick PRO Duo and the Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo.
